"Internet emotional expressions" refers to language used on the internet in a Chinese language environment, particularly the methods used to transmit emotional information. In the wake of in-depth research of Internet language, more and more scholars attempt to unite pure language phenomenons and trends on the Internet From a functional language perspective, research on Internet language has opened a new kind of thinking.Emotions are a large part of language expression. The function of Internet language as the expression of emotion is particularly prominent. This analysis will conclude that Internet language is composed of a rather large portion of emotional expressions. The content of these emotional expressions are internal, driving force behind changes in Internet language.Changes in the form of language and semantic meaning greatly depend on the promotion of emotions. At the same time, the final goal of this paper is to suggest that the appearance of new forms and semantic meanings as the language which can,to the largest degree, stimulate both parties’emotions. This thesis regards Internet language as acts of speech and studies how speech expresses symbols and words with multiple semantic meanings. The author believes the unique quality of Internet language is its use of symbolism and words with multiple meanings, which to the greatest extent remedies the drawback of the Internet’s language environment, that is,the inability to speak face-to-face.Face-to-face communication can,on the greatest scale, stimulate both participants’emotions.Internet language,in order to achieve emotional expression equal to that of traditional speech, must strengthen the "visualization" of speech.Internet language’s pursuit of the visualization of speech reflects speech’s visualization of emotional expressions, specifically in regards to three aspects:using emoticons to record emotions outside of speech, using emotional words to improve the function of the emotional expression, and remaking non-emotional words to suit emotional expression. This thesis will utilize icon principles, schema, profiles,as well as metaphors and metonymy to analyze the specific expressions and the causing factors of these three methods. This thesis is divided into six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction;its content includes a summary of the results of previous research, the goals and viewpoints of this research,a foundation of related principles,as well as the methods and materials.Within this section is a brief overview of the special qualities of Internet emotional expressions, which leads into the body of the paper. The second chapter analyzes the use of emoticons to express emotions outside of speech. For examples such as sarcasm, pronunciation and intonation, and mimicking actions, the use of emoticons not only has iconicity, but also prominently exists in Internet speech. In addition this section also analyzes the method of using emoticons to express emotion. The third chapter analyzes the use of emotional words.Internet language uses the change and creation of emotional words to express emotional concepts. It explains the goals of remaking emotional adjectives to produce new subcategories of emotional content. The transformation of emotional words is,in its essence, used for metonymy or to create metaphors from obvious content. The process of creating new emotional words,in its essence, also uses metonymy and metaphorical mechanisms to clearly present concrete meanings and finally,"activate" emotions. The fourth chapter analyzes the use of non-emotional words to express emotion.Emotional words in internet language also adopt the previous two methods, remaking and creating words. This causes originally unemotional words to function as emotional words. In addition to using the principles of schemas, metonymy, and metaphors, explains the process of how non-emotional words adopt the function of emotional expression. When expressing emotions,non-emotional words tend to use descriptive adverbial modifiers or complements for expression. The fifth chapter is the conclusion. It highlights the relationship between the visualization of emotional expression and modem culture’s transformation to a more visual culture. It analyzes the unique qualities of speech from the picture generation;furthermore,it points out incomplete areas and makes suggestions for improvement.
