According to traditional translation theories,"loyalty" to the original text was the main criterion to judge the quality of the translation, and the translation was centered on the original text, ignoring the translator’s importance and reducing the translator to a marginal position for a long time. Not until the advent of "cultural turn" in the 1970s did the study focus on the translators, and then translator’s subjectivity became an important research direction of translation’s subjectivity.Walden was written by the well-known American writer Henry David Thoreau. It occupies an important position in the world literature. Therefore,Walden is worth studying. The thesis focuses on the manifestations of translator’s subjectivity in selecting translation strategies, interpreting the original text, displaying translation styles and translating poems by a comparative study of two translation versions by Xu Chi and Xu Chongxin. There are many studies on translator’s subjectivity, but not on prose. But in fact, prose, with its style of "loose structure but condensed theme",throws more light on translator’s subjectivity. The thesis analyzes the process of the transfer of subject role in literary translation from the writer to the translator and the manifestations of translator’s subjectivity in two Chinese versions of Walden.By means of comparative study,we find that the translated version by Xu Chongxin can better demonstrate the translator’s subjectivity. The analysis of the manifestations of translator’s subjectivity in the perspective of comparative study helps translators to balance all factors when translating and thus produce more successful translations.
