A Translation Report Of The Moon,Come To Earth (Chapters 1-13) Under The Guidance Of Readers’ Reception Theory

The translation practice report is a report about the E-C translation of the first 13 chapters of The Moon,Come to Earth,which is a travelogue written by an American writer Philip Graham in 2007.The book mainly describes the life of Philip’s family for one year in Lisbon,the capital of Portugal,and contains details of the culture,language,literature and history of Lisbon.The writer described the local customs of Lisbon with humorous language style.The guiding theory of this translation practice is the readers’reception theory from German Konstanz.The concept of readers’ horizon of expectation and blanks respectively advocated by professor Hans Robert Jauss and professor Wolfgang Iser are the main theoretical basis of this translation practice report.The reader group of this thesis is defined as those who have a certain level of foreign language proficiency and are interested in Portuguese culture.The structure and plot of literary works have a large number of blanks descriptions.Based on that,the author classifies the blanks in translation practice into three categories:semantic blanks,contextual blanks and cultural blanks.In order to meet the horizon of expectation of target language readers,in this translation practice,the author intends to carefully consider how to preserve and fill in the semantic,contextual and cultural blanks through the translation methods of addition and footer annotation,so as to produce a more popular translation for readers.In addition,readers will be confronted with two cultural differences in the process of reading The Moon,Come to Earth.In order to help readers better understand the cultural differences between Portugal and the United States,Chinese and West,the author uses domestication and foreignization translation strategies to meet readers’horizon of expectation.This translation practice report is divided into five chapters.The first chapter mainly describes the characteristics of the translation task.Chapter two outlines the three stages of preparation before,during and after translation.Chapter three introduces the readers’ reception theory that guides the translation practice.Chapter four combines the readers’ reception theory with the cases of translation to examine the translation results.Chapter five details the translation experience of the author.
