| The source texts(STs)of this translation practice report consist of three texts.Among them,one is a text for the translator’s trial translation before he qualified for translating the two records mentioned.The other two are interview records involving two respective car owners,as part of interview records for a car consumer survey project.The STs involve car-wise aspects such as interior system,modification,sustainable interior-material.In fact,consumer surveys are a vital method used by companies to keep abreast of consumer needs,find out corporate deficiencies,and improve product and service quality.Hence,the translations of the STs have significance for keeping related automakers informed of the needs of Chinese consumers and helping make business strategies.In this practice,the translator was confronted with challenges in two aspects.First,the STs are full of improper expressions such as misused words,incorrect omissions,and mixed sentence patterns,causing difficulties in understanding the STs.Second,the STs are rich in auto jargon and experience descriptions for which reliable translation reference is scarce,causing difficulties in translating the STs.To tackle the difficulties above,the report analyzes the translations of the STs based on Catford’s theory of Translation Shifts.The theory is chosen on the grounds that the translations demand semantic conveyance rather than formal correspondence in light of many improper expressions in the STs and that semantic conveyance can be well achieved with this theory despite the lack of reference.Guided by the theory,the report is expected to provide some reference for solving typical difficulties in relevant translations,with analyses of concrete examples extracted from the STs. |
