| This translation practice study report is based on the biography From Vagabond to Journalist:Edgar Snow in Asia 1928-1941,which was written by American writer Robert Farnsworth. The author of the report selected chapters 31-34 as the translation practice from English into Chinese,in order to provide translation methods and strategies for this type of biography translation.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, the author of the report studies the translation of From Vagabond to Journalist: Edgar Snow in Asia 1928-1941 from two aspects of meaning equivalence and formal equivalence. In this report, text analysis and case study are used to study the translated text.In the process of translation, apart from being faithful to the original text, the author of the report also pays attention to the translation skills at the pragmatic, stylistic and linguistic levels, and strives to vividly convey the authenticity and literariness of biographical literature. In the case analysis, the author of the report enumerates representative proper nouns and culture-loaded words from the three levels of vocabulary, sentence and text,as well as the difficulties in translation, such as long and difficult sentences, passive sentences, textual cohesion, textual coherence and so on.Through the practice study of English-Chinese translation of From Vagabond to Journalist:Edgar Snow in Asia 1928-1941,the author of the report draws the following conclusions:literal translation can be done as far as possible, and if the literal translation is inappropriate, free translation or part-of-speech conversion should be adopted for the biographical text.In sentence translation, domestication translation strategy should be adopted to make the translated text conform to Chinese expressions. For example, the translator should distinguish the main and subordinate clauses, primary and secondary information, deal with parentheses in the long and difficult sentences, and avoid missing any information, while splitting the long sentence into short sentence for the reader’s understanding. When translating a text,we must unify translation standards and requirements,so as to make the semantic expression of the context accurate and the sentences smooth and fluent, and present the target readers with a consistent style of translation. |
