Jude the Obscure is the most controversial works written by Thomas Hardy. This work embodies time character, mainly presenting and criticizing malpractices in the late Victorian society. And their contents are sufficient, involving almost every aspect in people's life, such as marriage and family, education and religion. They describe the condition of both society and people deeply and vividly. As a litterateur full of knowledge and foresight in a transitional age, Hardy surmounts his time and puts forward some possibilities in the coming society. Through his works Hardy damns the darkness and oppression of his lag society, more significantly he tries to find solution for those troubles and helps people get rid of traditional limitation.Jude the Obscure primarily reflects the living, striving and spiritual pursuit of people in root grass. It discusses many conflicts in human activities, such as love and marriage and sexual relations, career and love, Christianity and human's developed demand, from multiperspectives shows the tight relation between human beings and environment. The thesis focuses on analyzing the reasons for Jude's failure and suicide with significant Darw(?)ism, which has been popular since nineteenth century. The thesis is divided into five parts:The first part is introduction, which briefly introduces the life experiences and essential ideas of Hardy, the main content of Jude the Obscure and presentation on both domestic and foreign researches. The second part analyzes methodology of tragedy and its social meaning, through presentation of tragedy theories in order to grasp essence of tragedy. The third part links three aspects of tragic factors—tragic character, tragic confliction and tragic spirit with Jude the Obscure so as to unfold Jude's tragic image. The fourth part analyzes Jude's tragedy from social tragedy and personality tragedy perspectives. What worth mentioning is that the thesis innovatively searches reasons for Jude's failure by integrating ethical proposition—meaning of life. The fifth part demonstrates significant academic purport and profound realistic influence of Jude the Obscure. The last part makes a conclusion on basis of general analysis.
