Translation Of Biography From The Perspective Of Contextual Theory

The author of this thesis selects the book A Narrative of the Captivity and Removes of Mrs.Mary Rowlandsonas as the source material for translation from English into Chinese,and the total words are around 25,000.Based on contextual theory,the thesis attempts to deal with some translation issues when linguistic context,situational context and cultural context are concerned in the source text,and to take relevant effectual strategies in biographical translation at large.Considering the linguistic context,the thesis proposes effective strategies in analyzing lexical,syntactic and contextual meanings,tries to eliminate the ambiguity and obscurity of the meaning of certain words and phrases.With respect to situational context,the thesis explores the application of contextual theory from three aspects: field,tenor and mode,aiming at searching their influence and functions over the translated text.When it comes to the cultural context,it probes into the issue of how to transmit source language culture to the target language readers without destroying its original meaning.In short,the thesis learns the previous studies and analysis of the theory of context,combines it with practical cases,deepens the translator’s comprehension of the theoretical development,and builds an explicit structure for understanding the content and significance of contextual theory,wishing to lay a solid theoretical foundation for future biographical translation.
