An Investigation Into Preposition Errors In Senior High School Students’ English Writing

Abstract/Summary:
English writing has always been one of the difficulties and focuses of English teaching.Errors in high school students’ English writing are uneven.However,among the many errors,preposition errors are most easily overlooked.Although prepositions are small words,they play an important role in linking contexts.The wrong use of prepositions affects the quality of English writing of high school students.Therefore,the analysis of preposition errors in high school students’ English writing can not only help students reduce preposition errors in English writing,thereby improving the grades of English writing,but also help English teachers improve the quality and efficiency of preposition teaching.Based on the theory of comparative analysis and error analysis,this study selects100 middle-term English papers from Qinglong X senior high school students as the survey objects,and collects 100 copies of English writing to classify preposition errors in students’ English writing.The main types of high school students’ misuse of prepositions in English writing are analyzed: prepositional mismatches,incorrect use of fixed phrases,less use,and overuse.In the end,it was concluded that students made the most mistakes in the use of fixed phrases and less.Secondly,the thesis summarizes and analyzes the reasons for the errors in the use of prepositions in English writing by issuing questionnaires and relevant interviews to teachers and students: the complexity of English prepositions,differences between English and Chinese prepositions,and high school Students’ habits of learning English prepositions,and high school students’ pessimistic attitudes towards English prepositions.Finally,based on the research results,the author puts forward to practical suggestions for students’ learning of prepositions and teachers’ teaching of prepositions.For students,first of all,they should pay attention to prepositions from an attitude;secondly,they should focus on the process of learning prepositions in peacetime.To accumulate and enrich their knowledge reserves,it is also necessary to minimize the negative transfer of mother tongue to preposition learning.Finally,students should do a good job of correcting and reflecting on preposition errors in English writing.For teachers,first,students should be motivated to learn prepositions;second,teachers should pay attention to the transitive and intransitive nature of English verbs when teaching English;finally,teachers should correct the prepositions in students’ English writing.Positive feedback should be given when mistakes are made to help and guide students in the study of prepositions.
