A Report On The C-E Translation Strategies Of Culture-loaded Words In The Fantasy Novel Apotheosis(Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Reception Aesthetics

Fantasy novel is a literature which originates from myths,legends and Chinese ancient Taoism,which attracts and influences a large number of oversea readers because of the wonderful Chinese cultural elements and the unique fantasy world the author has created in the novel.The demand for fantasy novel translation is also on the rise.The author often creates another world in the novel,in which there is new geography,weather,creatures,traditions and even different races,religions and history,thus forming a second world culture.That means,in addition to the cultural differences between China and English speaking countries,the culture of the virtual world gives the foreign readers another layer of obstacles to understand the meaning of the novel.Cultural-loaded words refer to words directly reflect the strong national color and distinct cultural personality.The distinct culture elements make it difficult to find corresponding expressions in English.The translation of culture-loaded words,therefore,has always been a great difficulty for translators.The author of the thesis joined the translation team of Apotheosis in 2019 and was one of the first translators of the novel.The author takes Apotheosis as the research object and Reception Aesthetics as the theoretical guidance,analyzing the characteristics of culture-loaded words in Apotheosis,and probes into the relevant strategies of C-E translation of culture-loaded words in fantasy novels.Chapter One is the introduction of the thesis,which introduces the characteristics of Chinese fantasy novel and the translator’s experience of translating Apotheosis.Chapter Two is the literature review of the thesis,in which the theory of Reception Aesthetics and the study of culture-loaded words are introduced.Based on these studies,the thesis explores the feasibility of Reception Aesthetics to culture-loaded word translation in Apotheosis.In Chapter Four,the author classifies the culture-loaded words in Apotheosis into five different categories,lists a lot of cultural-loaded expressions as examples and analyzes them,and presents the translation strategies respectively.Chapter Five is the conclusion part,in which the author summarizes the best strategies for translating culture-loaded words in Apotheosis.When translating Apotheosis,the translator applies the following translation strategies including literal translation,addition,subtraction,alteration,adaptation andfootnotes,aiming to find out suitable translation methods for the culture-loaded words with certain characteristics in different prototypical dimensions under the theoretical support of Reception Aesthetics.By writing the translation practice report,the author analyzes the problems encountered in the translation process and strives to find reasonable translation strategies to improve the translation quality.
