Reception Aesthetics based on Hermeneutics and Phenomenology. It developed from the late 1960s. Hans Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser are its representatives. Reception Aesthetics, which stresses reader-orientation, is a brand-new methodology in the field of literature research. It shifts the focus of both literary study and criticism from the reader-centered and text-centered to the status and role of readers'dynamic activity of reception in literary communication.Cultural-loaded words refers to the symbols of specific things, phrases and idioms in a certain culture. It reflects the special way of activities which has been gradually accumulated in the long history of certain nationality and differs from others. As one of the main carriers of the culture, culture-loaded words has its particularity, so the correctness of the translation of it will directly affect the communication of different cultures. This thesis studies on the Chinese culture-loaded words in Howard Goldblatt's English version of Honggaoliang written by Mo Yan who is the 2012"s winner of the Nobel Prize for literature. Translation principles and translation methods have been proposed by means of combining with Reception Aesthetics. First of all, the theory of Reception Aesthetics has been studied from the origin of the theory, main ideas of its representatives, the relationship between Reception Aesthetics and translation. Then, this thesis analyses the definition of culture-loaded words, the classification of Chinese culture-loaded words and translation methods of Chinese culture-loaded words applied by Howard Goldblatt in Red Sorghum. In Howard Goldblatt's English version of Honggaoliang, the transliteration, the substitution, the omission, the abridgement, the transliteration plus free translation, the transliteration plus literal translation have been used. Based on Reception Aesthetics, three translation principles of Chinese culture-loaded words have been proposed:to pay more attention to horizon of expectations, to pursue aesthetic pleasure and to build text appealing structure. Meanwhile, according to the specific type of Chinese culture-loaded words, corresponding translation methods can be used:as to the translation of ecological culture-loaded words, the omission or substitution should be used; as to the translation of material culture-loaded words, the abridgement or omission should be used; as to the translation of social culture-loaded words, the literal translation with annotation or transliteration should be used; as to the translation of religious culture-loaded words, the transliteration should be used; as to the translation of language culture-loaded words, the free translation or abridgement should be used. This thesis probes into the translation of Chinese culture-loaded words in the hope of doing good to the translation of Chinese literary works and the "going-out" of Chinese culture.
