| Since Halliday and Hassan put forward the textual function theory in 1976,the focus of language research has gradually been shifted from sentence to discourse level.As one of the important components of discourse function theory,cohesion theory is also favored by language researchers.Thus,many language researchers study the relationship between the students’ writing quality and the cohesion and coherence in discourse on the basis of the textual function theory in order to explore how to improve the students’ English writing level.Conjunctions as a cohesive device,its main function is to connect the different components of the text and to ensure cohesion and coherence.At present,teachers devote more time and energy to the explanation of language knowledge,but ignore the importance of text,which leads to the problem of incoherence of sentences in students’ writing.Therefore,the key to solve these problems is the rational and effective use of conjunctions.This study starts with the use of conjunctions in English writing and analyzes the main reasons of errors occurred in junior high school students’ English writing.The author hopes that it can provide a feasible guiding method for the use of conjunctions in junior high school students’ English writing,and also expects to make some personal contribution to English teaching.Hence,the author puts forward the following three questions:1.How about the use of conjunctions used in junior high school students’ English writing?2.What are the main types of conjunction errors in junior high school students’ English writing?3.The main reasons for the wrong use of conjunctions in junior high school students’ English writing?The steps and approaches are as follows: first,the author selected a junior high school in Changchun City and extracted a total of 150 composition texts from the three grades of the school as the research material to analyze the general situation of conjunctions used by junior high school students in English writing;then analyzed the errors of conjunctions used by junior high school students in their English Writing;at last,made a summary of the results.By analyzing and studying the data,the author found that: there exists a wide difference between the using frequency of conjunctions in junior high school students’ English writing;the wrong use of conjunctions includes three main aspects: the excessive use of conjunctions,the misuse of conjunctions and the absence of conjunctions;the use of conjunctions with low frequency is manifested as ambiguity and misunderstanding of the meaning of conjunctions.In addition,the main reasons for the wrong use of conjunctions in junior high school students’ English writing include the following aspects: the confusion of the meaning of conjunctions;the influence of mother tongue;repetitive use of a single conjunction.In short,the capacity of using conjunctions of junior high school students needs to be further strengthened.Hence,this study puts forward the following suggestions on English writing teaching: broaden the use of conjunctions;emphasize the importance of discourse;diversify the writing instructions. |
