Writing teaching plays a great role in English teaching and is one of the tasks of English lesson during basic education.There are various writing requirements for students in different levels in the New English Curriculum Standard for Senior High School(2017),especially for students' ability of textual cohesion.Conjunction plays an important role in achieving the coherence of the article which is a key part of ensuring the consistency of the entire article and makes the article smooth and readable.Therefore,it is especially necessary to study the use of conjunction in students' composition and put forward teaching suggestions on conjunction for teachers.The subjects of the study were 160 senior high school students in grade two from The Attached High School to Nankai University.This study used the method of analyzing students' composition of mid-term examination and questionnaire which combined quantitative and qualitative analysis to answer the three questions of this study:1.How frequently are conjunctions used in high school students' writing? 2.What are the errors of the use of conjunctions in high school students' writing? What are the causes of these errors? 3.What is the relationship between use of conjunctions and the quality of compositions? This study analyzes the compositions of 160 senior school students in grade two of The Attached High School to Nankai University to find out the problems of using conjunctions among high school students the causes of the problems by questionnaire.In addition,Pearson-related analysis was used to identify the relationship between the quantity of conjunctions used and the quality of composition.The results indicate that 1.the quantity of conjunctions in students' composition is high,but the distribution of conjunction is not even— addictive and sequential conjunction are used most,while,the exemplary conjunction is used least.2.common errors in students' use of conjunction are as follow: abuse of conjunctions,absence of conjunctions,misuse of conjunctions,mixed use of conjunctions,and single use of conjunctions.Through the analysis of the students' questionnaire,it is found that the main causes for the error of students' use of conjunctions are negative transfer of mother tongue,different thinking patterns between China and the West,students' learning habits and improper teaching methods of English writing and conjunctions.3.the relationship between the number of conjunction and the quality of composition is positive correlation.According to the results of the study,the author puts forward some suggestions on teaching English writing and conjunctions: 1.Increase the teaching of comparing Chinese and English and overcome the interference from Chinese.2.Explain conjunction systematically to reduce mixed use of conjunction.3.Use “process writing” methods and cultivate students' good writing habits.4.Enrich students' conjunction in reading.
