| “300 Yuan Songs” is a literary collection in the Yuan Dynasty with unique and rhyming characteristics and dialectal features.It consists of Yuan-zaqu and Yuan-sanqu,which follows rigorous rules and forms of classical poetic composition.Up to now,Yuan Qu has entirely been known to scholars at home and abroad,who gave a comparative study about Yuan Qu,focusing on the translation strategy.It came as a revelation to us that the process of studying Yuan Songs goes further and further under different perspectives.This dissertation mainly concentrates on the translator’s subjectivity in Xu Yuanchong’s translation of 300 Yuan Songs from the perspective of Manipulation Theory in two aspects: ideology and poetics.Under the guide of Manipulation Theory,the translator,Prof.Xu Yuanchong,rendered an outstanding translation version of the famous Chinese classic.The author analyzes the translator’s subjectivity from three levels--lexis,syntax and text by demonstrating what translation methods and strategies the translator mainly adopted in translation.By doing this study,it can be found that the Manipulation Theory and the “Three Beauties” Principle integrated in unity,highlighting the translator’s subjectivity,play an important role in rendering a high-quality English version of “300 Yuan Songs”.Judged in this sense,Mr.Xu Yuanchong’s translation definitely achieved the artistic conception and beauty of 300 Yuan Songs.This dissertation comprises five parts.The first part mainly takes eye on the discussion of research background,methodology,purpose,significance and framework.The second part conducts a full review of relevant researches on 300 Yuan Songs and translator’s subjectivity.The third part presents an outline of theManipulation Theory.Based on the Manipulation Theory,the fourth part,through concrete examples of source text(Chinese)and target text(English),explores in detail the translator’s subjectivity in the translated version.Through a summary of the dissertation research,the last part shows the research findings and deficiencies as well as suggestions for relevant future academic work on the English version of 300 Yuan Songs under the perspectives of Manipulation Theory. |
