News Translation Practice

The development of social network enabled netizens to acquire the world's latest information simultaneously,and translation plays an indispensable role in it.The thesis chose five articles from The Economist to constitute a special series on the U.S President Donald Trump as a study case for translation research of current political reviews.Based on the understanding of political stand,language characteristic and target reader of The Economist and analysis of the original text functions,the thesis established basic translation strategy.Under the guidance of Lefevere's Manipulation Theory,this thesis explores the manipulation of ideology,poetics and to emphasize translator's subjectivity during this translation practice.The thesis uncovered four main points in current political reviews translation.First of all,translator should understand the original text.Translator should research relevant background knowledge before translation,and distinguish political stand,ideology and rhetorical devices of the media,so as to avoid mistranslation.Secondly,the translator should cope with ideological manipulation skillfully.Translator should pay close attention to relevant national laws,rules and censorship,as well as refer to target language's socio-cultural background to adjust translation in order to agree with readers' ideology.Thirdly,use poetic methods flexibly.With dynamic equivalent principle,based on different text functions the translator can choose different translation strategies.Fourthly,attach importance to expression of translator's subjectivity.Translator should learn how to express his/her subjectivity within the limitation of ideology,poetics and others.The thesis not only intends to remind translators of the existence of manipulations but also provides methods to confront those manipulations.In the meantime,translators should present the subjectivity under the constraint of manipulation,and try to find out how to balance the manipulation and subjectivity during the translation process.This thesis hopes to provide some experience for current event reviews translation.
