Obstacles In Listening Comprehension In English To Chinese Consecutive Interpretation And The Solutions

Listening comprehension is the first step in interpretation and it has an impact on the interpreter’s understanding of the source language.Fine interpretation needs a good listening comprehension ability.Listening comprehension is of great importance in interpretation.In the mock conference interpretation of Ian Newton’s speech about refugees,many mistakes occurred because of listening comprehension obstacles,leading to some language output problems.This paper analyzes the reasons for listening comprehension obstacles and puts forward some improving strategies accordingly based on the writer’s interpretation performance of the mock conference.The reasons for listening comprehension obstacles include language factors,imbalanced effort distribution when taking notes and lacking extra-linguistic knowledge.Based on the analysis of listening comprehension obstacles,this paper puts forward some improving strategies.Interpreters should practice in daily life in order to improve listening ability,collect new words,distribute effort reasonably and accumulate background knowledge.When doing interpretation exercise or work,interpreters should strengthen analysis of the source language and distinguish key and secondary information,and make reasonable anticipation from the speaker’s perspective.Eliminating or reducing listening comprehension obstacles can improve interpretation output greatly as well as strengthen interpreters’ confidence.The author refers to relevant literature,analyzes the reasons for listening comprehension obstacles in this paper and knows more about listening comprehension.It is hoped this paper can provide reference for the author and other interpreters in order to reduce listening comprehension obstacles and improve interpretation performance.
