A Pale View of Hills is actually the narration of British Japanese woman’s memory of her life after the atomic bombing in Nagasaki,Japan and London,U.K.This thesis applies Simone de Beauvoir’s feminist theory of subjectivity embedded in her The Second Sex to abstract subjectivity embodied in three female characters individually.Their subjectivity turns out to be against what demanded on woman by phallocentric theory of subject:immanence, passivity and submissiveness. In spite of the rebelliousness, they are not supposed to make any success in any career other than their sole occupation—marriage. The thesis concludes that the construction of subject is a conditional process;when the economic foundation of the ideology that constructs subject collapses, the process of construction stops;consequently, the oppressed nature makes its way;the narrator tells her own life story in disguise of her friend since only through catering to patriarchal taste could she sell her story.
