| This report is based on Chapters One to Five of elf and the World:A Biography of William Faulkner which describes the growth and life story of the famous writer William Faulkner,with high authenticity and literariness.Under the guidance of semantic translation theory and communicative translation theory,this report aims to analyze the methods and techniques used in translating biographical literature.Semantic translation is totally different from communicative translation.The former pays more attention to faithfulness to the source text and strives to maintain the content and form of the source text.While taking the target readers as the core,the latter can make appropriate adjustments to reduce the difficulties in their reading.As authenticity and literariness are prominent features of biographical literature,in the process of translation,the semantic translation theory and communicative translation theory can be used alternately by the translator to achieve the best effects of the translation.On the basis of the translation practice,this report consists of four main chapters.Chapter One is the task description,mainly covering the introduction to the source material,features of the source text and significance of the task.Chapter Two presents the process of the translation task,including preliminary preparation for translation,translation process and quality control.Chapter Three,a major part of the report,analyses the cases in accordance with semantic translation theory and communicative translation at the lexical,syntactic,and discourse level.Chapter Four makes a summary of the translation reflections as well as the limitations of the task.This report is supposed to provide some help for the later translation and research of biographical literature. |
