| The object of this study is the woodwind nonet:Petite suite gaulois op.90,composed in 1888 by French Romantic composer Theodore Gouvy(1819—1898),a famous European composer in the 19th century, whose works mainly consist of symphonies, chamber music and other instrumental works.Although these works seem to have nothing to do with the Europe where opera was prevalent at that time, their works incorporate a lot of traditional French musical elements on top of traditional techniques, reflecting the French musical style of the Romantic period, and are recognized by a wide range of musicians of the same period. The Petite suite gaulois op.90,completed in 1888,is a chamber work for nine woodwinds that perfectly combines the timbres of five woodwind instruments, giving full play to the characteristics of each, making it one of the finest pieces of woodwind chamber music. The author will use musicological analysis to specifically and carefully analyse and study this work. The author divides this thesis into three chapters, the first of which is a general introduction. The first chapter is a general introduction to the life and composition of Theodore Gouvy, the social context and the creation of the woodwind nonet:Petite suite gaulois. The second chapter is devoted to a specific ontological analysis of the work(theme,motive,tonality,harmony,style,orchestration,etc.).The third chapter is devoted to the stylistic characteristics of the work, the composer’s artistic concept and its causes, based on the general introduction and the ontological analysis, and on the author’s practical experience with the work. |
