Th(?)odore Gouvy(1819-1898)is one of the most famous French composers in the 19th century.He has a wide range of composition genres and a rich production of works.There are nearly 100 numbered works.Gouvy’s works more embody the traditional style and there is no lack of 19th century creation techniques and aesthetic characteristics.They have both beautiful and pleasant melody and rigorous harmony style,showing a partial classicism style.This vocal music collection Six Art Songs for Baritone and Piano(Op.21),completed in 1858,was composed for the six poems of Moritz Hartmann and dedicated to the baritone singer Nachlass Julius Stockhausen.This vocal music collection is a perfect fusion of poetry and music,fresh and natural,and embodies beauty of simplicity and elegance,which is Gouvy’s style.This article,Musicological Analysis of Th(?)odore Gouvy’s Six Art Songs for Baritone and Piano(Op.21)will use musicological analysis focusing on the score itself and on the social and historical background.While analyzing the style characteristics of the Six Art Songs from the aspects of musical language including melody,harmony,musical structure,etc.Then it also sorts out the creative context of the work and explores its spiritual and cultural significance,so as to define the style of the work to achieve the research purpose of Th(?)odore Gouvy ’s historical positioning.
