| This paper studies the New Senior English for China(PEP)based on Cunningsworth’s textbook evaluation framework.The aim of the study is to explore whether the arrangement and design are consistent with students’ cognitive laws and whether it is conducive to students’ English learning through the analysis and evaluation of the overall framework,the readability of the reading texts,the presentation and practice of the grammar items,the repetition rate of the newly learned vocabulary and the arrangement and design of the vocabulary list.And the following four questions are answered:Firstly,how is the teaching content in the New Senior English for China(PEP)arranged?Secondly,how is the readability of the reading texts in the textbooks?Thirdly,how is grammar items presented and practiced in the textbook,and does it follow the three-dimensional grammar theory?Fourthly,how is the vocabulary arranged in the textbooks,and does it beneficial to students’ vocabulary learning?Literature method is adopted to have a overall review of the previous researches on evaluation of textbooks.Teaching material analysis method is adopted to analyze the content arrangement of New Senior English for China(PEP)so as to understand whether the arrangement and design of the textbook are consistent with students’ cognitive rules and whether they are conducive to students’ English learning.It is discovered that:Firstly,the compilation of New Senior English for China(PEP)is in accordance with the objectives,and the arrangement of the textbooks reflects the principle of gradual progress.The arrangement of language is from easy to difficult and from simple to complex.Secondly,the arrangement of reading texts in the textbooks generally follows the from-easy-to-difficult and repetition principle and the readability fluctuation of reading texts in some units is mainly influenced by their genre and contents.Thirdly,the textbook presents grammar knowledge in each unit in a certain order,and generally follows the principle of cyclic extension.The units are not only interrelated,but also continuously updated and expanded in depth of knowledge.Some grammar items are scattered,so it should be considered to present these grammar items in one unit first and then to reproduce them in other units.Fourthly,the compilation of the vocabulary is in line with the actual teaching situation,meets the students’ learning needs,and also matches the requirements of vocabulary in the curriculum standards.But there are too many words beyond the syllabus of vocabulary design in the textbooks,which should be appropriately reduced.Moreover,the repetition rate of new words in the textbook is relatively low,which is not conducive to students’ memorization and mastery of words.This thesis makes an evaluation of the New Senior English for China(PEP),hoping to provide some reference opinions for the compilation of New Senior English for China(PEP)and the use of textbooks by teachers. |
