A Report On The Translation Of Brother Carl From The Perspective Of Catford’s Translation Shift Theory:Based On The Chapter 1-3

This translation report is based on the first three chapters of the movie script of Brother Carl written by a famous American feminist writer and art critic.Also it is Susan Sontag’s second film script after Duet for cannibals.In the process of translation practice,the author finds that there are massive colloquial clauses,short sentences,simple sentences and complex long and difficult sentences in the original text.Therefore,in order to solve the difficulties and problems encountered in translation,the author summarizes the cases in the translated text and uses Catford’s translation shift theory as the guidance of this report to analyze the problems existing in the process of translation practice and the countermeasures adopted.This paper falls into four chapters:Chapter One is the introduction,including the introduction of the translated version,the textual characteristics,the purpose and significance of the study.Chapter two is a literature review of Catford’s translation Shift theory at home and abroad,as well as its potential limitations.The third Chapter is a case study of The Brother Carl.The author mainly discusses the guiding role of hierarchical transformation in singular-plural and tense shifts,while syntactic translation is based on category shifts.Through theoretical guidance and case study,the author finds that the structure in category shifts can be translated by studying the grammatical structure and voice of the source language.The last Chapter is a summary of the author’s experience in this translation practice.This paper discusses the guiding significance of this theory in solving the vocabulary and syntactic problems in translation practice.At the same time,the author also summarizes some translation strategies to cope with the limitations of the theory,in order to achieve a better translation effect.
