Explicitation And Implicitation In The C-E Translation Of Logical Cohesion In Political Discourse

Political discourse is the foundation for constructing a political discourse system that bridges Chinese and foreign communication.It is also a direct way to enhance the creativity,appeal and credibility of China’s international discourse.As an initiative to ensure China has its say in the realm of ideology,the C-E translation of political discourses for international publicity carries forward the ideal of socialism with Chinese characteristics in a more creative,and credible way.Since the 18th National Congress of CPC in 2012,Xi Jinping:The Governance of China(Volume Ⅰ and Ⅱ)as the newest theoretical results in the localization of Marxism in China serves as a wise guidance of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation as it convey Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.In this regard,the thesis compares the logical cohesive devices throughout the C-E translation of the Governance of China from the perceptive of explicitation and implicitation,and explores the shift of cohesion between explicit and implicit devices on the temporal,causal,adversative and additive relations,so that the default information of the ST is compensated in an explicit way and the redundant one omitted in an implicit way.The major findings of this study are summarized as follows:1)the Chinese version of the Governance of China is less advantageous in the explicit cohesion,including parallel sentences or sentences with serial verbs,of which the additive relations take the lead,then the adversative relations,while the hypothetical relations take the least;2)the explicit cohesion in its English translation is remarkable than that in the ST,of which the additive and adversative relations exceed the casual,the hypothetical and the temporal relations;3)the shift of explicit cohesion throughout the C-E translation has been reserved in the translated text,and translators use the means of addition,explanation and annotation to express the implicit cohesion in the ST.When the cultural default and redundancy is blocked in the way,translators may take refer to substitution,ellipsis and semantic omission to avoid the deviation from the source text.
