In conference interpreting, interpreters are supposed to convey the intentions and ideas of the speaker. To achieve better performance, interpreters should use deverbalization, including explicitation, implicitation, and an extensive restructuring of sentences.Interpreters would fail to convey the true message if they only directly translate a speech word-by-word or sentence-by-sentence.Speakers and listeners are from different cultural backgrounds, and they have distinct ways of understanding.Especially,in popular science speeches, interpreters also need to notice whether audience understands specific terms or concepts. Therefore, explicitation and implicitation play a crucial role for interpreters to better convey the speaker's messages. This paper discusses how explicitation, implicitation and an extensive restructuring of sentences help improve interpreters' performance. For example, when the speaker is making a rather conceptual and abstract speech,or uses acronyms a lot,the interpreter should additionally give an explanation. When the speaker is giving a vague and general speech, the interpreter should make it clearer to the audience. When the speaker uses redundant sentences, the interpreter should make deletions accordingly. And when the speech is abstruse and difficult to understand, the interpreter is responsible to remind the speaker of it,to adjust the speech. This paper also gives possible solutions and insights for interpreters to practice deverbalization, including explicitation and implicitation,in order to achieve better performance in conference interpreting.
