Raymond carver is a famous novelist and poet in the second half of the 20 th century in the United States,is known as "America’s Chekhov".He is famous for his "minimalist" writing style, known as the founder of "new novel",and is a rare observer and expression of "hard times" in the American literary world.Throughout his life he was interested in sculpting the short story over and over again. He wrote six collections of short stories, and his works have been selected several times by the best American short stories. His creation focuses on the daily life of ordinary people and aims to reveal the marital status and survival problems of the American blue-collar class.Loneliness is one of carver’s main themes.Based on the lonely writing in carver’s creation, this paper adopts the specific research methods such as close reading and case analysis, connects carver’s understanding and experience of loneliness, clarifies the concrete manifestations and causes of loneliness, points out the resolution way of loneliness, and discusses the nature of loneliness. The first part of the paper mainly introduces the research status of carver’s creation, the research methods and research value of the paper. The second part of the thesis reveals the loneliness of characters in carver’s novels. The loneliness of characters in carver’s works is mainly manifested in three aspects: not being recognized, being separated from the group and having no spiritual support. The third part of the thesis analyzes the deep reasons of the characters’ loneliness in carver’s works.Firstly, the lack of affection, friendship and love creates a loveless environment for the subject, leading to the lonely feelings of the characters.Secondly, barriers arise in the verbal or spiritual communication between people, leading to the lonely life of characters. Finally, the subject’s own repression, alienation and self-value cannot be realized, resulting in the lonely experience of the characters. These three factors contribute to the loneliness of the characters in the novel. The fourth part mainly explains the resolution of loneliness in carver’s later works.Through the study of carver’s later representative work "cathedral",it proves that carver dispels loneliness in his creation, and concludes that human love and self-strengthening are two effective ways to cope with loneliness.
