Raymond Carver's Dilemma Experience

As a short story writer in the second half of the 20th Century of America,Raymond Carver has made great contributions to the revival of American short stories.He spent his life in telling the story of blue collar in America,epicting the characters who struggle between the disappointment,bankruptcy,poverty and broken marriage.These characters are also associated with him.These figures lost the"code hero " temperament,they are downfallen hero.They have no faith.Their souls are empty.People can not communicate with each other.They are alienated man of modern life.Carver dissects the desperate people who survival in troubles,gives slim hope to them for getting the courage to live.Whether Carver himself or his works,they are all rooted in the last half of the 20th Century society of America." Counter culture " of the society have a certain impacts on his life and works and Carver’s life and works also reflect American society.Carver records affairs of the silent majority in society with his works.He Provides the opportunity of self reflection for modern people in his review.His works have humanistic significance and social significance.This paper aims to analyze Carver’s dilemmas existing on his works and discuss the long-term significance on society of his works.This paper is divided into five parts to discuss the experience of dilemmas in Carver’s works:The introduction introduces the Carver’s creation and research status at home and abroad,and discusses the care for the lower middle classes from Carver works.The first chapter is based on the texts,discussing individual’s frustration and breakdowns of family.Carver choose the frustrated in the society as the writing targets by seeing the hit from failure to human.This kind of individual suffered further affected family and society.His characters has become the type of Sisyphus named " downfallen hero " instead of the " code hero "The second chapter discusses the spiritual dilemma of modern people generally exist from three points of view:the lost,impossible communication,the people’s alienation.Lost caused empty mind,the states of bisexual binary opposition is broken.Communication becomes more difficult in modern society under this kind of situation,and then,individual is alienated.The third chapter discusses the cultural characteristics of America with Carver’s works. " Counter culture " has become a theme that runs through them.The conclusion summarized the meaning of Carver’s works.In a word,dilemmas in modern society which Carver depicts is hard to avoid.The dilemmas is not only confined to the Carver’s era,but also the problem of all mankind faced with.Carver’s works undoubtedly provides a kind of care about human living conditions for us,and has profound practical significance.
