| In the age of globalization and information,the development of online media and digital technology has given birth to a new mode in the field of audiovisual translation,namely,interlingual live subtitling.It satisfies the human needs of media accessibility and brings convenience to the hearing impaired;it is also an important means to break language barriers and promote global communication.This new type of audiovisual translation has attracted wide attention from scholars abroad,such as the Interlingual Live Subtitling for Access(ILSA)project supported by the United Nations and the World Health Organization from 2018 to 2020.However,in China,interlingual live subtitling research has not attracted the due attention.Firstly,this thesis explains the relevant concepts of interlingual live subtitling.Then it describes and classifies the subtitling process and presentation formats of interlingual live subtitles as well as their different features.Attention is paid to the uniqueness of interlingual live subtitling in the three elements of translation subject,process and text.Among all its characteristics,multimodal aspects are attached great importance.Therefore,this thesis attempts to answer how multimodal perspectives can help understand interlingual live subtitling.Secondly,a case study is carried out from multimodal perspectives in both product-oriented and process-oriented descriptive ways,through which the thesis is aimed at answering what the visual-verbal relationships in the multimodal target text are,what characteristics they show and how they differ from those in the multimodal source text.Based on a primary exploration of the translation process,possible reasons are also explained.Finally,suggestions of interlingual live subtitling for practical purpose are summarized from the case analysis,in order to provide reference for the future practice in China.The research finds that the visual-verbal relationships of multimodal texts in interlingual live subtitling mainly include four kinds of equivalence(token-token,typetoken,metonymy and metaphor)as well as four kinds of complementarity(exophora,agent-object,apposition and adjunct).Furthermore,the visual-verbal relationship of complementarity is increased in the target text,which means that the target text is more dependent on the interaction between visual mode and verbal mode to construct meaning than the source text.In other words,the visual-verbal relationship of complementarity is strengthened in the target text.Considering the interlingual live subtitling process,the enhancement of visual-verbal relationship and the discordance between interlingual live subtitles and images can be both attributed to interpreters’ and post-editors’ different choices of translation and editing strategies.The various links in the interlingual subtitling process are closely related,and the chain reaction ultimately affects the representation and multimodal characteristics of the target text. |
