Multimodality Analysis Of Coping Strategies For Subtitling English Into Chinese

A new mode of Audio-visual translation,live subtitling,has emerged in the global digital information wave from print media to multimedia.Live subtitling has made the media more accessible,facilitating the hearing-impaired and helping videos reach a wider audience in today’s multilingual and multicultural society.This new mode has attracted many international scholars to study the interaction between visual mode and language mode and the quality evaluation model for live subtitling.And a relevant training project on live subtitling was established under the support of the United Nations and the World Health Organization in 2018.However,in China,live subtitling research is mainly based on homogeneous case analysis,and the theoretical framework and methodology need to be improved.This study first reviews the development of subtitling research and multimodal theory in the past,and distinguishes between live subtitling and traditional subtitling.Of two common forms of live subtitling,namely man-machine coupling and allmachine translation,the author focuses on the man-machine coupling way and chooses the Apple’s Fall Launch Event 2022 as the case to study.This study explores the visualverbal multi-modal relationship and uses quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis together to give product-orientated and process-oriented insights.This thesis tries to explain the strategies adopted in the process of live subtitling and summarize the features of the more audience-friendly subtitling.In live subtitling,the multi-modal relationship between image and language are either equivalent or complementary.Compared with the source text,the complementarity/equivalence ratio goes up in the interpreted version.This shows that,the interpreter would actively analyze and integrate the information conveyed by the visual mode when recontextualizing source materials.During post-editing,the staff would consider technical requirements for subtitling and make a trade-off.Live subtitling is a project that needs a clear division of labor and close coordination.It will be widely used in the future.For now,to improve the theoretical construction and personnel training is the core to promote the development of live subtitling.
