Abstract/Summary:
Lu Ling was a "genius" writer in the history of modern Chinese literature. His gloomy and passionate literary style was unique in the left-wing literary world in the 1930s and 1940s.Perhaps because of his uniqueness,Lu Ling’s works are often misread by readers. This misreading is not only thematic, but even formal. In the past ten years, more and more critics regard Lu Ling’s works as examples of modern literature with the tendency of "Europeanization",and interpret his works from different approaches. On the basis of predecessors’ study,I surveyed the historical context of the "Europeanization" of Lu Ling and tried to test the rationality of europeanization tendency, and I expanded the research from the linguistic level to the stylistic level. This paper attempts to establish an organic connection between Lu Ling’s literary form and literary thought, and to explore the causes of the impression of "Europeanization" and the formation of Lu Ling’s literary style. The first chapter firstly sorts out the two historical contexts of the debate on the issue of "Europeanization" in the New Literature Movement, that is,the debate between the new and the old in the form of language and the debate between the intellectuals and the public in the position of class, and then discusses the occurrence of "Europeanization" in the specific historical context of Lu Ling. The"Europeanization" impression of Lu Ling’s novel style is not a linguistic problem, but originated from a kind of reading experience with complex and ambiguous connotations. The second chapter discusses Lu Ling’s literary style in detail. When we put aside the previous view of "Europeanization" and delve into Lu Ling’s literary style,we will find that it is a kind of unsmooth and somber literary style. This is related to Lu Ling’s unique language form, that is,the long and difficult sentence with high frequency.Lu Ling’s purpose in using this form of language is to express emotions more accurately.Compared with "Europeanization","somber" may be closer to the essence of Lu Ling’s literary style, and "Europeanization" may be a "misreading" of Lu Ling’s somber style. This kind of somber style is first reflected in Lu Ling’s psychological analysis of figures, and the most prominent feature of this psychological analysis is the large number of analytical paragraphs. In the stacking of characters’ monologues and a lot of analytical paragraphs,There are more and more psychological descriptions in Lu Ling’s novels, which finally disturbs and squeeze the narrative part of the novel, and makes it very difficult for readers to read. This writing technique makes the narrator’s"voice" always overwhelm the protagonist’s "voice".The narrator’s "voice" intervenes even in the protagonist’s monologue. At the same time,Lu Ling’s novel style also sets up another emotional reading barrier for readers. The establishment of this obstacle is accomplished through the expression of the concomitant emotion contained in the "sublime" of passion. This kind of sublime is embodied in the two images of "bridge" and "wilderness".It is precisely because of the somber sublime that Lu Ling’s unique somber style finally came into being. The third chapter discusses the relationship between Lu Ling’s literary style and his own literary view, among which Luling’s understanding of "content" is the most important part.A novel style is essentially a matter of form, and in Lu Ling’s opinion, content is more important than form.Form should fit content. It is because of Lu Ling’s attitude towards form and content that he can safely adopt a novel style that is"unfamiliar" to readers. In the end, this "unfamiliar" and yuejiee style was named"Europeanization" by readers based on their unclear reading experience.Lu Ling also believed that the "content" of literature and art must come from real life. This kind of "content" rooted in real life is the core and development trend hidden under life, and it is the real and complex essence of things. The purpose of Lu Ling’s writing is to extract the general content from the specific object, which is another reason for the style of Lu Ling’s novels. The content must also be integrated with the people.Content that belongs to the people can naturally arouse wide resonance among the people. The content of art does not belong to one person only. The strong individuality in Lu Ling’s novels may be a manifestation of the commonness in his own eyes.At the same time, the content is concrete and changeable,it is not an abstract dogma. This kind of flesh and blood content is full of warmth. Therefore, although the style of Lu Ling’s novel is convoluted,it is certainly not incomprehensible.Instead of pushing diligent readers out of its world,it evokes their empathy and entices them to explore the work further.
