| In modern Chinese,two-character words account for a large proportion of commonly used words, and word recognition is a necessary part of language comprehension. Therefore, the recognition and processing of two-character words have always been one of the crucial topics in cognitive psychology and psycholinguistics. In this study, two experiments are conducted to investigate the recognition and processing of two-character verbs in sentences context with“adverb+di+two-character verb”(e.g.,耐心地辅导)collocation by skilled Chinese learners. The experimental materials of this study are 25 two-character verbs and 25 sentences embedded in them.Experiment One is a behavioral experiment to investigate the effect of character order on word recognition in sentence context using a self-paced reading paradigm. The second experiment is an ERP experiment, which used an audio-visual cross-channel paradigm to investigate the cognitive processing mechanism and time course of two-character verb recognition in sentence context and the time course of orthography phonology activation. The results show that in the behavioral experiment, there is no significant difference in reaction time between words and transposed non-word,and there is also no delayed effect in word processing after target words. In the ERP study, both P200 and N400 show significant differences in word types’ main effects on midline electrode and scalp topographic map analysis.P200 has the largest amplitude in the word condition, and N400 has the largest amplitude in the non-homophone word condition, and semantic P600 effect appears in the late word processing.Combined with the two experimental results, the basic conclusions of this study are: in sentence reading, contextual information can promote the recognition of the target word, and subjects try to form a firm semantic expectation of the two-character verb in collocation, cognitive and therefore will be more attention to the condition of resource allocation in line with expectations, resulting in the reduction of P200 effect in early processing. In the visual presentation task, the subjects mainly process the two-character word as a whole in reading, while they primarily processed the morpheme in the audio-visual cross-channel.Therefore,the subjects would adopt different processing strategies in different language environments.Semantic P600 is generated when the target verb in the sentence is violated with the thematic role. This study provides new evidence for two-character word recognition in sentence context. On the one hand, the experimental results reveal the influence of orthographic and phonetic information on two-character word recognition in sentence context, the influence of semantic expectation on lexical processing, and the moderating effect of sentence context on this anticipation. On the other hand, this paper has some reference value for Chinese natural language processing and Chinese teaching. |
