Writing is an important way to output language and express ideas,and it is also an important part of the core competence of English discipline.The proportion of high school English composition scores in the college entrance examination is relatively high.A good composition can express ideas fluently and efficiently,and sentences often need to be connected by means of transition or explanation.Therefore,the correct and effective use of cohesion devices in writing plays an important role in improving the quality of students’ writing.On the basis of previous studies,this study combines discourse cohesion theory and error analysis theory,collects 185 compositions of the mid-term examination from five classes of a senior high school in Huaibei,and analyzes the number and errors of four cohesion devices.This study focuses on three issues:(1)What is the situation of the use of cohesion devices in senior high school students’ English writing?(2)What are the main errors of cohesion devices in senior high school students’ writing?(3)What are the reasons for the errors of cohesion devices in senior high school students’ writing?Through the analysis of the number of cohesion devices used and their errors in the sample data,it is found that the number of cohesion devices and the errors are not balanced.In terms of quantity,reference and conjunction account for an absolute proportion.Students are more used to using reference and conjunction,but rarely use ellipsis and substitution.In terms of the number of errors,the proportion of errors of reference and conjunction is higher,while the proportion of errors of ellipsis and substitution is small.And in all kinds of conjunction means of error,the students’ error is more concentrated.Among them,in the errors of reference means,the errors mainly focus on the misuse,absence,excess etc.in the use of reference;in conjunction,the errors concentrate on the improper use,repetition and zero conjunction;in ellipsis,the errors the errors mainly fall on the misuse and zero errors;so as the errors of substitution.These aspects of errors affect the quality of students’ writing and reduce their writing level.Therefore,in English teaching,teachers should pay more attention to cohesion devices,and give more guidance to students on how to make effective use of cohesion devices and avoid making mistakes again,so that students can develop good learning habits and English thinking mode,and express their ideas efficiently.Students should also enhance the ability to analyze errors and accumulate cohesion devices in the process of learning,and use them in communication,so as to reduce or avoid cohesion devices’ errors and improve the quality of writing.
