Chen Que has no reputation in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. As a scholar infiltrated by Confucian culture,Chen Que practices the Confucian principle of filial piety, and corrects the common customs with the filial piety principle advocated by Confucianism in his daily life. His thoughts on how the offspring should honor his parents enrich and develop the connotation of the thought of filial piety in ancient China. In the process of marching south, the army of Qing dynasty used political means to carry out the order of shaving hair.Shaving hair or not shaving hair, the Han people faces the difficult choice between life and death, filial piety and loyalty. After he thinks about it,Chen Que finally decides to shave his hair because of his mother.Collecting poems and essay for parents’ birthday is the way of honoring the parents for the offspring at that time.Wise parents are enough to celebrate their own birthday.Poems and essay collected for parents’ birthday are ridiculous. And showing respect to parents should start from the practical. So Chen Que advises his friends to stop collecting poems and essay, but he composes poems for kin relatives. His behavior is obviously contradictory.Chen Que expands the use of the phrase that there is nothing wrong with the parents. He thinks we should reflect on our own behavior when dealing with our brothers and friends. However, there is nothing wrong with the parents only for the offspring. If parents are wrong in getting along with others, the offspring should dissuade the parents.Chen Que thinks Shun properly handles the relationship between his parents and brothers, and he has a lot of imagination and beautification of Shun’s filial piety.Rites are the only measure of filial piety for the relationship between rites and filial piety in funeral.Funeral rites should be strictly observed, and from this we can judge whether the offspring’s filial piety is true.Chen Que overlooks a fact that the impact of changing times on funeral rites is inevitable. In Chen Que’s opinion,if a woman marries and becomes a man’s wife, she has to look after husband’s father and mother, and gets in their good graces. This is a woman’s way of being filial, however woman become family and male appendages, and lost their independence.
