Technical texts are special texts used for scientific and technological research and academic exchanges, including scientific and technological papers, experimental reports, scientific literature, etc. The function of this text is description and explanation. It is characterized by accurate content, objective presentation, clear organization, and strong professionalism and practicality. In recent years,China has attached great importance to international integration and actively introduced foreign advanced technology to promote industry development. However, the translation of technical texts still encounters many problems due to the specificity and professionalism of technical contents. The solution to these problems directly influences the readers’ understanding of professional knowledge and even the application of technology by experienced technicians.Hence, the study of technical text translation has become a significant research topic under the current circumstances. The technical text The Planet in a Pebble starts from a small pebble and explains the key concepts and research status in geology such as mineralogy, radioactivity, and nuclide dating. As one of the books in the “Oxford Milestones in Science” series,it has been adopted as a professional textbook by well-known geologists and scholars.Furthermore,it has also attracted the interest of a wide range of non-specialists.The Chinese translation of this text can not only help introduce foreign excellent geological theories and ideas to China, but also provide certain reference for the translation research in the field of technical texts.Text Typology was proposed by Katharina Reiss(1971),a well-known German scholar and translation theorist. She classified texts into three main types(informative, expressive, and operative)and put forward translation principles respectively.According to Reiss, the genre of a text had a meaningful impact on selecting a translation strategy. In view of this, this paper takes The Planet in a Pebble as the translation practice, and explores the translation strategies of technical texts from the perspectives of accurate transformation, complete transformation, and target language orientation, aiming to fully verify the feasibility of Text Typology in guiding technical text translation,so as to realize the integration of theory and practice. This paper is composed of six parts. The first part is the introduction, which presents the research background, research significance, and layout of the paper. The second part is a literature review that comprehensively summarizes and elaborates the research achievements and current research situation of the Text Typology and technical text translation at home and abroad. The third part is the theoretical framework, which comprehensively interprets historical development, connotation, translation principles of Text Typology, and the feasibility of the theory in technical text translation. The fourth part is the analysis of technical texts, which presents technical texts in terms of their types and characteristics, and analyzes the language features of The Planet in a Pebble. The fifth part is a case study under the guidance of Text Typology, which adopts case analysis method, and deeply explains the translation strategies of technical texts based on the Text Typology’s principles, that is,accurate transformation, complete transformation, and target language orientation. The last part is the conclusion, which thoroughly overview the research findings, deficiencies of the paper, and provides an outlook on technical texts translation research.
