As China speeds up its pace of opening to outside world, tourism industry playsan increasing important role in national economy. Tourism texts are the general termof all texts related to tourism, including tour site introduction, tourism advisement,and tourism publicity materials etc. A good translation of tourism text is beneficial toenhance China’s international image and of paramount significance to facilitatecultural exchanges and economic cooperation. Hutong tourism, as one major form offolk tours, gathers up the profound Chinese culture and serves as the best approach forforeigners to understand China.In the history of translation practice, a great number of translation theories areapplied in tourism translation, but the outcomes are not quite satisfactory. Reiss andNewmark’s text type typologies are based on Karl Buhler’s Tripartite Classificationof language function, and categorize text types as informative, expression andvocative/operative text. This thesis collects a great deal of Hutong tourism examplesand classifies Hutong tourism texts into three types on the basis of text type theory:Hutong informative, expressive and vocative/operative text. The author first analyzesthe problems of previous studies in this field and then puts forward the idea of guidingtranslation practice with text type theory. As for translation strategy, the informativetexts demand the accurately conveying of information; expressive texts call forreserving the aesthetics and artistic form of source text; vocative texts require theequivalence of effect to readers.This research, to some extent, has its own significance both theoretically andpractically. In theoretical aspect, this thesis proves that it is feasible to handle tourismtexts with text type theory; in practice, combining with a series of practical translationstrategies, such as adaptation, selection, addition, omission, paraphrasing andtransliteration, text typology provides the translator with proper approaches to dealwith the cultural and linguistic problems and to better guide the translation practice.
