A Study On Dialogue Translation Strategies Of Mo Yan’s Novels From The Perspective Of Cooperative Principle

Mo Yan is the first winner of Nobel Prize for Literature in China;Mo Yan’s novels originate from the Chinese folk culture,which have attracted wide attention at home and abroad.The creation of Mangrove also shows the feature of magic realism,and its narrative methods are also innovative.Mangrove is about that a fisherwoman who entered the city from a fishing village and bravely started a new life after experiencing hardships;this is in sharp contrast to Mayor Lin Lan’s degenerated and distorted life.Taking the dialogues in Mangrove as examples,this thesis studies translation strategies from the perspective of Cooperative Principle.Cooperative Principle was put forward by American linguist Grice in 1967.Cooperative Principle is one of the major breakthroughs in pragmatics,which has attracted wide attention.Grice believed that people would unconsciously follow some rules in conversation,so as to effectively cooperate and complete the communicative task.Therefore,he proposed Cooperative Principle that includes quality maxim,quantity maxim,relevance maxim and manner maxim.Once these principles are violated,special “conversational implicature” may be generated.Through continuous development,the content of Cooperative Principle has been enriched,and it has also been applied to other studies.It can be used not only in discourse analysis,but also in dialogue translation.Therefore,this thesis is expected to improve the dialogue translation of Mangrove from the perspective of Cooperative Principle.Besides,specific translation strategies are put forward,which can provide a certain reference for the dialogue translation of Mo Yan’s novels.This thesis illustrates the research background,research purpose,research significance and the overall structure.Then,it summarizes the main academic viewpoints on Cooperative Principle and Mo Yan’s novels translation,introduces the origin and development of Cooperative Principle,its four main principles,as well as the language and literary features of Mangrove.Considering cultural and linguistic differences,this thesis makes a comparative analysis of the original translation and the revised translation from the perspective of Cooperative Principle.According to the main viewpoints of Cooperative Principle,this thesis puts forward corresponding translation strategies,which can make dialogue translation more fluent and easier for readers to understand.In brief,this thesis summarizes Cooperative Principle at home and abroad on the basis of previous studies.Through the analysis of specific examples,this thesis proves that Cooperative Principle is of certain significance for dialogue translation;it is hoped to provide some references for the further study of the translation of contemporary Chinese novels.
