| Peace and development are themes of today’s world. With the deepening of globalization, the exchanges between countries are getting even closer. In this context, the importance of translation and interpreting is becoming increasingly prominent.Given the distinct character of instantaneity, simultaneous interpreting(SI)now plays a significant role in international communication and is in great demand, with an increasing number of excellent interpreters devoting themselves to this industry. The author believes that the rapid expansion of the market will inevitably lead to further subdivision of the industry. This kind of subdivision may be reflected in the language directionality, such as:English-French SI,Chinese-English SI,English-Chinese SI.However,at present, the focus of academic research is mainly on the general field, and very little attention has been paid to the subdivided field, and even fewer researchers have noticed the impact of language directionality in SI.In the future,it must be easier for an interpreter with expertise in a certain field, scene,or language direction to win the favor of market. Therefore,as the basis of practice, research on the subdivided field of SI must be given more attention. From daily learning and practice, the author finds that different language direction has a certain impact on the selection of strategies in SI.Some scholars have been doing research in this field, but most of them are focusing on translation or consecutive interpreting and few studies have been conducted from the perspective of SI.Therefore, this paper has certain significance. The China 2017-Shaping Globalization and Inclusive Growth TV forum has been chosen as the material of this mock SI.Based on Gile’s effort model, the author studies the impact of language directionality on the selection of strategies in SI by means of statistics and data analysis.According to the statistical results, the author picked out five strategies, which are significantly affected by the language directionality and are frequently used,i.e.omission,anticipation,addition,segmentation and repetition and analyzed them one by one with detailed examples. Finally, the author draws a conclusion that the usage of these five strategies is significantly affected by the language directionality which can be further interpreted as:in Chinese-English SI,the interpreter tends to choose the omission(secondary information),anticipation and addition strategies;while in English-Chinese SI,the interpreter prefers omission(redundant information caused by different models of language expression),segmentation and repetition strategies. The author hopes this paper can help interpreters better understand the selection of SI strategies in different language directionalities and guide their future learning and practice. |
