English and Chinese are two languages of different language families. There exist many differences between English and Chinese because of history background, culture customs, way of thinking and other factors. For example, the focus of English sentences is in front, while the focus of Chinese sentences is on the back in terms of sentence structure; English uses more passive voices and by contrast Chinese prefers active voice as to grammar structure; English adopts more pronouns, however, Chinese prefers verb when word use is put into consideration. Therefore, interpreters have different focuses on strategy use when conducting English Chinese interpreting and Chinese English interpreting. Many studies and researches have been done about the difference between two language directions interpreting, but most of which are focused on consecutive interpreting or carrying out research from the perspective of professional interpreters’ experience and few researches have been conducted with an experiment method on simultaneous interpreting.Six MTI students majoring in interpreting were selected as experiment participants and two English speeches about volunteerism and education reform and their corresponding Chinese speeches were selected as experiment materials. The experiment was carried out in a simultaneous interpreting lab. The six interpreters interpreted four speeches and at the same time their interpreting outputs were recorded. The aim of this experiment is to explore the correlation between adopting strategies and accuracy of interpreting from English Chinese direction and Chinese English direction. The author transcribed all 480 selected sentences into texts and made analysis of which strategies were used. The author also made frequency statistics of every strategy used by every interpreter during their English Chinese interpreting and Chinese English interpreting. Finally, the author conducted the correlation between adopting strategies and accuracy of interpreting from English Chinese direction and Chinese English direction. The experiment results are listed as follows:(1) As to English Chinese direction, syntactic linearity strategy and word order adjustment strategy have high positive correlation between adopting strategies and accuracy of interpreting. Amplification strategy has correlation but not positive correlation between adopting strategies and accuracy of interpreting. Omission strategy and waiting strategy have no correlation between adopting strategies and accuracy of interpreting.(2) As to Chinese English direction, syntactic linearity strategy and omission strategy have high positive correlation between adopting strategies and accuracy of interpreting. Combination strategy and paraphrasing strategy have no correlation between adopting strategies and accuracy of interpreting. And amplification strategy has correlation but not positive correlation between adopting strategies and accuracy of interpreting. Therefore, during simultaneous interpreting teaching and study, the author suggests that syntactic linearity strategy and word order adjustment strategy should be paid more attention to from English Chinese direction and from Chinese English direction, more attention should be given to syntactic linearity strategy and omission strategy.
