A Study On Mental Modal Propositions Of Linguistic Representation In Chinese Political Discourse:An Intentionality Theory Account

Mental modal propositions are formed by selecting,using different types of mental modal verbs and then operating its corresponding object or intentional domain by speakers.Mental modal propositions attribute to processing of mental activities.Mental modal propositions are divided into three kinds: cognitive mental modal proposition,emotional mental modal proposition and volitional mental modal proposition.No matter daily oral English expression or textual expression,there are a lot of different types of mental modal propositions of linguistic representation.As a kind of written discourse,the political discourse includes many different types of political discourse.By reading related literature about research on political discourse,the author finds that a few achievements have been made on mental modal propositions of linguistic representation in political discourse from the perspective of intentionality in philosophy of mind.Especially taking Government Work Report as political discourse to make researches about mental modal proposition is rarely known by People.In view of this,the thesis takes the Government Work Report of the State Council(2017-2019)as research corpus and makes researches on mental modal proposition in political discourse.The study discusses: 1)The generation process of mental modal proposition of linguistic representation in political discourse.2)The significant characteristics of the frequency of the use of three types of mental modal propositions in political discourse and the reasons behind them and so on.In virtue of intentionality theory in philosophy of mind and analyzing the textual characteristics of political discourse,the author interprets the mental modal proposition of language representation in Chinese political discourse from the perspective of intentional content and intentional attitude.The author also explains the process of generation and the reasons of mental modal proposition in Chinese political discourse.The research shows: 1)The starting point of political mental modal proposition is intentionality.The generation process and formation process is that mind chooses mental modal propositional attitude and mental modal propositional content.2)The mental modal propositions in Chinese political discourse is mainly volitional mental modal proposition,followed by emotional mental modal proposition and cognitive mental modal proposition.This is different from our daily expression.In our daily expression,the main mental modal proposition is cognitive mental modal proposition,followed by emotional mental modal proposition and volitional mental modal proposition.This phenomenon is related to the textual features and its purpose.The linguistic expression in Chinese political discourse contains many volitional mental modal verbs.It has the characteristics of modality.Chinese political discourse makes political communication by applying political discourse.It has the characteristics of declaration and contains a lot of cognitive mental modal propositions of linguistic representation.
