What Is Proposition--From Two Kinds Of The Approaches To Study The Proposition

Proposition is an important term of Logic. What is the proposition? With regard to this problem, Traditional Logic and Modern Logic have different answers. Moreover, with the development of Modern Logic, there are some new points of views about this topic. Consequently, led by the matter of what is proposition, I have researched the evolvement of connotation of the term "proposition ", especially by means of discussing, evaluating and comparing two kinds of the Approaches to Studythe Proposition in Modern Logic-the approach based on Semantics of PossibleWorld and the other based on Theory of Speech act. Based on this, I try my best to find the essence of these changes and their distinctness.The thesis has four chapters.chapter One discusses two kinds of idea of Proposition. It includes the following sections: First, an outline of two kinds of definition of proposition which is accepted in Logic; Second, one account of how Aristotle defined the "proposition " and what trouble faced by him, in the same way, another account of how Frege defined the "proposition" and his trouble. In that case I indicate that their theory on "proposition " respectively represent the idea of Proposition of Traditional Logic and the idea of Proposition of Modern Logic.Chapter two investigates the approach to study proposition based on Semantics of Possible World. Concretely, I take account of how Semantics of Possible World defined the term "proposition", and how to deal with these issues correlated to it, that is, its connotation, the relative between proposition and "proposition attitude" as well as "truth ", "Identity of Proposition". In succession, I try to specify the deficiencies of this approach.Chapter three discusses the approach based on Theory of Speech Act. Especially, I want to analyze how J-L- Austin and Searle deal with the term "proposition" and other issues correlated to it such as "proposition attitude", "truth" and "individual". As a result, I try to summarize the new idea of Proposition and the new idea of Logic which this approach contained.In chapter four, from several special topics: Proposition, Truth and Truth-Bearer, Proposition and Proposition Attitude,, Proposition and Logic, I compare two kinds of the approach to study proposition. On the basis of these compare, I try to find the different way of logic hided in two approach, which makes us to revalue Propositionand Logic.Anyway, the paper has following mew sights: Firstly, A study of the evolvement of Proposition will offer us a wonderful opportunity to have a glimpse of proposition, which makes me deal with these issues concerned with proposition differently. Secondly, a special recognition to the definition of Theory of Speech act will make us attach important to the new idea of Proposition and the new idea of Logic it contained. Thirdly, the compare between two approaches will lead us to protest: we should spread the area of survey of Logic, we should think of factor of individual in Logic.
