Multiple thinking and critical thinking are the basic qualities of innovative talents.English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017 Edition)has proposed that English teaching should develop students’ multiple thinking and critical thinking,improve their English reading ability.However,in the daily teaching of English reading,students’ difficulty in improving their English reading ability is not only the lack of language knowledge,but also the lack of in-depth reading ability.Improving students’ reading ability requires them to learn to ask questions in reading and make clear the main idea of discourse through comprehensive analysis,and combining with the cognitive schema in the mind,the students’ do a series of deep processing on the discourse,such as reasoning and evaluation,so as to form their own views.It can be seen that the introduction of critical reading teaching in senior high school is particularly important to promote students’ in-depth reading and improve their critical thinking.Based on the theory of Constructivism and Schema,this study adopts the methods of questionnaire,test and classroom observation to carry out the application research of critical reading strategies in a senior high school in Huaihua,Hunan Province,and elaborates the application of critical reading strategies in narrative,expository and practical teaching.The following two questions are to be answered:(1)How to apply critical reading strategies to senior high school English reading teaching?(2)How does critical reading strategy teaching affect students’ English reading ability in senior high school? The research spans four months from September 2019 to January 2020,and the subjects are two classes of senior one.The author of the thesis adopts critical reading teaching in the experimental class,that is,the process of interpreting text,inferring text,and expanding text.It mainly covers such steps as reading the title of the article→guessing words according to the context→analyzing the structure of the text→understanding the text deeply→evaluating the text→comprehending in self-criticism.The traditional reading teaching is taken in the control class.During the research,the students of the two classes are investigated by questionnaires and tests before and after class,all the data are analyzed on the basis of SPSS20.0 software statistics.It is found that teachers can integrate critical reading strategies,including prediction strategies,distinguishing facts and opinions,identifying inferences and conclusions,identifying the author’s attitude and intention into critical reading teaching.The statisticalresults show that critical reading teaching in senior high school highlights the dominant position of students in interactive learning.It can not only help students master the strategy of in-depth reading and improve their reading comprehension ability,but also help to expand their multiple thinking ability and improve their critical thinking,and therefore achieve the goal of improving their English subject quality.
