Modality is the subjective attitude of the speaker towards the truth value or the reality state of the proposition expressed in the sentence. As a representative category of modality, deontic modality expresses the speaker’s judgment on the possibility of the event in the proposition.According to the basic theory of contrastive linguistics, any comparison should be based on a common basis.Deontic modality is a common semantic category in languages.Although Chinese and Uyghur languages belong to different language families, they both have formal markers to express deontic [necessity],[obligation] and [permission] meanings. Therefore, this paper takes the deontic modality semantics as the common point and reference point of comparison, and makes a comparative analysis of its manifestation in Chinese and Uygur languages, which is in principle comparable to some extent. The task of contrastive linguistics is to study two or more languages synchronously and describe their similarities and differences.Guided by the theories of contrastive linguistics, this paper analyzes and compares the forms of deontic modality in Chinese and Uygur languages from multiple perspectives. This paper hopes to provide some references for further study on deontic modality in Chinese and Uygur languages and comparative study on cross-language modality, help language learners to deepen their understanding of deontic modality, and provide some ideas for the translation of deontic modality semantics in Chinese and Uygur languages. The paper is divided into five chapters:The first chapter is the introduction, which clarifies the topic selection basis and research significance of this paper, relevant research status and concept definition, research ideas and methods,as well as research focus, difficulties and innovation. The second chapter is the analysis of the manifestation form of Chinese deontic modality.Based on the specific connotation of the meanings of deontic modality [necessity],[obligation] and [permission] mentioned in the definition of deontic modality,it summarizes the manifestation form of deontic modality of Chinese, and classifies and illustrates its grammatical characteristics. The third chapter is the analysis of the manifestation form of deontic modality of Uyghur languages. It summarizes the manifestation form of deontic modality of Uyghur languages according to the semantic gradient from high to low,and classifies and illustrates its grammatical characteristics. The fourth chapter is the comparative analysis of the manifestation form of deontic modality of Chinese and Uyghur languages. This part mainly extracts the contents in the previous part and makes a summative comparison of the similarities and differences of the manifestation form of deontic modality of Chinese and Uyghur languages. The fifth chapter is the conclusion, which summarizes the whole paper and points out the shortcomings in the research.
