| Modality is one of the means to express interpersonal function of language. It can express personal desires, obligations for others, and judgments on how things develop. In particular, deontic modality is employed to emphasize the determinants of the speaker’s making decisions given objective needs or responsibilities. Therefore,in EDST(English for Defense Science and Technology)translation, the accuracy of deontic modality’s translation will directly affect the accuracy of practical operation by readers. The study aims to translate deontic modality in EST(English for Science and Technology)more precisely,so as to help original readers and target readers better understand the importance of operating instructions in the given context and therefore fulfill their responsibilities and obligations properly.Hence, from the perspective of interpersonal meaning, this thesis, taking the translation of Special Forces Military Free-Fall Operations(Paras.4-38,Chapter 4-Chapter 8)as an example,is committed to analyze deontic modality through value, orientation, and metaphor.Besides,on grounds of the analysis of examples in the text, six translation strategies are found out, involving value equivalence, value conversion, simplification of complex statements, adjustment of word order, modal supplementing, and modal diminishing. It is anticipated that this research can more or less improve the efficiency and quality of EDST as well as providing rewarding guidance and reference for the translation research and translation practice of EST. |
