The Ministry of Education promulgated English Curriculum for Senior High School in 2017,in which the Ministry of Education proclaimed the Core Competences of English.Core Competencies of English consist of four aspects: linguistic competence,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.With the popularization and application of Task-based Teaching method in high school English reading teaching,Task-based Teaching method is one of the teaching methods that help cultivate students’ core competencies.This paper is based on constructivist learning theory,holistic educational theory,humanistic educational theory and second language acquisition,employs questionnaire,test and interview as the research instruments,and takes 100 senior high school students and an English teacher who teaches these 100 students English in Qingtongxia senior high school as the participants.From the view of students,this paper investigates the present situation of the cultivation of students’ core competencies in the reading class that takes Task-based Teaching as the teaching method in senior high school.This paper mainly discusses the following questions:Question 1: What is the current situation of cultivation of students’ Core Competencies under the Task-based approach?Question 2: What impacts does the Task-based reading teaching approach under the background of Core Competencies have on students’ English reading score?The results are showed below:(1)Above all,it is found that the development of students in the four Core Competencies of English is unbalanced in English reading class.Students and teacher all attached more importance to language competencies,but neglected the three other competencies.Besides,the four competencies are at the medium level,so it is obvious that the cultivation of students’ Core Competencies of English in English reading class is far from the requirements of the new curriculum standard(2017).As for the linguistic competence,students can’t greatly output what they have read through speaking and writing,and teachers usually don’t take the expression and communication of students as the significant teaching goals and students also think a little of it.As for the cultural awareness,students are insufficient in cross-cultural knowledge and consciousness.In the aspect of thinking quality,students especially need to improve critical thinking ability and creative thinking ability,because these two kinds of abilities are lower than logical thinking and both of them are at relatively low level.In terms of learning ability,students lack the ability to make the learning plan and goals by themselves.(2)The Task-based Teaching applied in English reading teaching under the background of Core Competencies has a significant difference on students’ reading score,and the students’ reading score is higher than before teaching.Although students’ language competencies has been improved,the other three competencies only have been improved a little,which is unbalanced improvement.
