Disfluencies In Chinese-English Consecutive Interpretation And Corresponding Solutions

Fluent delivery has always been what a trainee interpreter or even a professional interpreter pursues when it comes to improving interpreting skills.This thesis analyses the disfluencies in the Chinese-English consecutive interpretation at the 3rd Understanding China Conference Press Briefing.Disfluencies in this case are categorised into pauses,repeats,and self-repairs.It is found that filled pauses are the most frequently occurring disfluencies,followed by A-repairs,D-repairs and singleword repeats.Under the framework of Levelt’s speech production and self-monitoring model,and through an analogical analysis of the similarities between the on-site interpreter’s delivery and the author’s own interpretation,this thesis identifies the causes for the disfluencies,such as inefficient lexical search and selection,inadequate syntactic processing capability,unproficiency in note-taking and note-decoding,a slip of the tongue or pressure-driven phonetic planning errors,and personal habits.In view of these causes,relevant suggestions are given to improve interpreting performance in the formulating,articulation,self-monitoring and conceptualising processes,including enlarging the lexicon,improving syntactic processing skills,finding a proper speech rate and changing habits which cause disfluencies,developing well-organised notes,and enriching background and task-related knowledge.
