Disfluencies are common in daily language production. The medium of interpreting is language;therefore, disfluencies are inevitable when interpreting. Moreover, interpreters are under more stress due to multitasking, therefore, disfluencies are more likely to happen. However, disfluencies can impair the quality of interpreting output. The purpose of interpretation is to deliver messages to audience.Too many disfluencies will hinder audience from accepting and understanding information. Moreover, audience could even lose trust in the interpreter due to disfluencies. Therefore, interpreters should try their best to reduce the number of disfluencies in their interpreting. This thesis is a case study based on the mock conference of Joseph Nye's speech at the Oxford Union. The author analyzes and calculates three major types of disfluencies in the case, namely simple disfluency, parallel disfluency and complex disfluency. After analyzing real interpreting examples, the author finds that there are three reasons behind these disfluencies, and they are: insufficient background knowledge, inappropriate language organization and the absence of self-monitoring.The author also provides targeted coping strategies for those problems. To reduce disfluencies caused by insufficient background knowledge, interpreters should fully prepare before interpreting, and omit the parts that interpreters are not familiar with.To reduce disfluencies caused by inappropriate language organization, interpreter should keep their tempo at a moderate rate and try to be more flexible so as to avoid unnecessary self-corrections when interpreting. To reduce disfluencies caused by the absence of self-monitoring,interpreter should enhance self-monitoring to reduce the number of fillers, and pay more attention to communicating with the audience.
