Since the middle of the 20th century,there has been an upsurge of critical thinking research in western countries.Therefore,compared with foreign countries,domestic researches on critical thinking began latter than foreign countries.After the publication of2017 edition of the English Curriculum Standards for High Schools,critical thinking has emerged as a formal identity for researchers in China.Therefore,China begins to pay attention to the cultivation of students’ critical thinking.In order to improve the critical thinking performance of senior high school students in English learning,it is necessary to know the current situation of critical thinking performance in English learning,and provide specific suggestions according to the existing problems.Based on the Delphi Model theory,this study,by adopting the combination of questionnaire and interview research method,investigates the performance of critical thinking in English learning of senior high school students in Neijiang.Through the analysis of their truth-seeking,open-mindness,analyticity,systematicity,self-confidence,inquisitiveness and maturity,the author puts forward some suggestions to improve students’ critical thinking.And the following three questions are discussed.(1)What is the current situation of Neijiang high school students’ critical thinking ability in English learning?(2)What are the differences of critical thinking between different genders and academic records when learning English?(3)What are the reasons of these problems found in this study?The research results show that:(1)at present,the overall situation of critical thinking in Neijiang high school students’ English learning is below the average level.Students’ open-mindness,analyticity and inquisitiveness are better than truth-seeking,systematicity,self-confidence and maturity.Among them the best is open-mindness,the weakest is self-confidence;(2)there is no significant difference between the boys and girls in terms of overall critical thinking performance,but girls’ performance is better than boys in terms of open-mindness and maturity but weaker in systematicity.The students with better academic records have a better performance of critical thinking in English leaning;(3)the reasons are: teachers lack the awareness of cultivating students’ critical thinking in teaching;parents and teachers are too controlling and students lack the ability of independent thinking.The problems existing in current situation need to be improved by teachers,parents and students together.The author gives the following three suggestions on how to improve the performance of critical thinking in Neijiang high school students’ English learning.For teachers,in the teaching process,they should use advanced questions to arouse students’ thinking,and at the same time be an inclusive teacher;for students,they should break the exercise mode and conclude their own methods of doing the different types of exercises;for the parents of students,they should let students learn to make their own decisions and judge what is right or wrong by themselves.
