Meta-functional Analysis Of "Poverty Alleviation" Texts In The English Version Of Government Work Reports(2016-2020)

The Chinese Report on the Work of Government(CRWG)is read by Premier at "two sessions" annually.In this study,it is viewed as a special political speech,which is a good way for the speaker to convey his political thoughts and ideas to the audience.The political discourse is so unique that this study chooses it as the research objectIn recent years,the "Poverty Alleviation" project in China has attracted many people’s attention,especially in 2020.Previously,few scholars choose the topic,like "Poverty Alleviation" texts,as their research object under the guidance of linguistic theory.Therefore,the study takes "Poverty Alleviation" texts of the English version of CRWG(2016-2020)as the research samples.This study tries to take the "Poverty Alleviation" texts as the research samples to test the Meta-function theory.Halliday’s Meta-function theory is utilized as the theoretical framework.The textual function,ideational function and interpersonal function are three basic elements of Meta-function theoryThis study combines qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis to analyze the"Poverty Alleviation" texts in(2016-2020).Author makes good use of the collected texts and the Meta-function theory to answer these four research questions that has been raised in this study.The results of the study show that the Textual Function of "Poverty Alleviation" texts is achieved by Thematic Structure.By analyzing these "Poverty Alleviation" texts,the number of the unmarked theme is more than the marked theme.Ideational Function is fulfilled by the transitivity system.Among these six processes,the material process,relational process and existential process occupy the top three places in "Poverty Alleviation" texts.The Interpersonal Function of "Poverty Alleviation" texts is realized by the mood,modality and personal pronouns system.In the mood system,the declarative clauses are the main types of mood without imperative or interrogative clauses.In the modality system,these three modal verbs("should","will","must")are utilized the most frequently in "Poverty Alleviation" texts In the personal pronouns system,the first person pronoun "we" is used to maintain a harmonious relationship between the speaker and the audience.By analyzing the "Poverty Alleviation" texts,the conclusion is that our government’s responsible image is realizedThis study explores the language features of "Poverty Alleviation" texts with the aid of the Meta-function theory.These features not only indicate the government’s determination to win the battle against poverty but also reflect the government’s leading role.It also proves that the practicality and the applicability of meta-functions as well as the government ideology.
