Abstract/Summary:
The material of this translation practice report is excerpted from Letters of Samuel Johnson(Volume III)by Dr.Samuel Johnson, who was a British writer, literary critic, poet and dictionary compiler in the 18 th century. The letters were written by Dr.Johnson to his family, friends, publishers, booksellers, doctors, political figures and various other people. In the translation, the translation model of Vinay and Darbelnet has been borrowed to help render an ideal translation. This report is a summary of the teachings and experiences of the translator obtained from the translation practice. It first introduces the translation process and Vinay and Dabelnet’s translation model, the two strategies and seven procedures of which were put forward by Vinay and Darbernet for English-French translation. Then case analysis is used to demonstrate how the target text has been translated to achieve equivalence in English-Chinese translation at the lexical, syntactic and message levels, through adopting specific translation procedures under the guidance of Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation model. In the end,a conclusion is drawn that the model of Vinay and Dabelnet is also applicable for English-Chinese translation though it was first put forward for the practice of English-French translation and can be used to instruct the translation of the epistolary text from English to Chinese.
