| Cognitive differences in metaphor may hinder the translation of metaphor. It is the differences that leave a huge space for translators to create, which makes metaphor translation different from general translation. In recent years, some scholars have improved the metaphor translation model from the perspective of cognition. However, only a few scholars pay attention to the combination of translation practice in real corpus and metaphor translation methodology. Most of the studies on translation practice focus on English,Arabic or German. It is rare to study the source language and more than three Chinese versions as corpus. This paper conducts an empirical study on the translations of Chinese Metaphors in Pride and Prejudice by constructing a small translation corpus.Based on the research methods of Mubenga(2009:446)and Taheri-ardali(2013),this study puts the translations in the corpus up to eight. The translators’ translations in this corpus include Wang Keyi,Sun Zhili,Zhang Ling,Fang Huawen,Wang Jinhua,Lei Limei,Li Jihong and Luo Lianggong.According to the data, the results of the metaphor translation scheme of this novel can be summarized as follows: translating metaphor into: metaphor of similar mapping condition and similar metaphorical expression;metaphor of similar mapping condition but different metaphorical expression;metaphor of different mapping condition but different metaphorical expression;non metaphor. It is found that the simpler the metaphor is,the less options the translator has to consider. The results show that the translation schemes of metaphors with different mapping conditions but the same metaphorical expression in the metaphor translation model does not appear in the corpus. This study reveals the implications of cognition for metaphor translation tasks in Chinese and English cultures. It is also instructive to consider the possibility of metaphor translation in two different cultures from the perspective of cognition and how to achieve this in both theory and practice. |
