Methods And Principles Of Metaphor Translation

Metaphors always shine out in literature works,one can never avoid the discussion of metaphor translation in literature translation.As the establishment of metaphor concept in cognitive perspective,the deeper comprehensions about metaphor,including the relationship between translation strategies and contextual elements and the reasonable evaluation criteria for metaphor translation,are gradually realized.In the novel of Pride and Prejudice,Jane Austen applies semi-implicit or fully-implicit metaphor to skillfully fuse the tenor and vehicle,making the language concise and thought-provoking.This kind of metaphor comes from the personal feelings and experiences of the writer,which makes the language richer and more accurate.This thesis intends to analyze metaphor translation in three Chinese Versions of Pride and Prejudice by research methods of literature survey and comparative studies.The source text is Pride and Prejudice published by Knowledge Publishing House in2017,and the three translation texts are respectively from Wang Keyi(Shanghai Translation Publishing House,2019),Sun Zhili(Yilin Press,2019)and Zhang Ling &Zhang Yang(People's Literature Press,2019).Guided by functional equivalence theory,the metaphor translation methods are summarized in terms of "transplanting metaphor","shifting metaphorical image","abandoning metaphorical image","extending metaphorical image","adding annotation".Due to the different cultural traditions and cognitive styles of different nations,there are various differences between Chinese and English metaphors.In the cases of metaphor coincidence,transplanting metaphor seems to be the most proper strategy.When metaphor parallel is faced in the translation process,shifting metaphorical image is a good way to help the target readers acquire equivalent feeling as the original readers.In the cases of metaphor conflict or metaphor vacancy,the metaphorical image can be abandoned when necessary.With regard to some unnoticed metaphors,translators can extend the metaphorical images.Addingannotation is a good strategy to preserve the cultural characteristics as well as to help target readers to comprehend the metaphors.Three principles of metaphor translation are summarized,which are: 1)retaining original connotation: retaining the similarity between tenor and vehicle of original text;2)docking cultural connotations: expressing the cognition of English author in the thinking mode of Chinese readers;3)covering lost connotation: minimizing the loss of culture image.
