The Dutch writer Cees Nooteboom is one of the most outstanding contemporary European writers. With more than fifty years of travel,Nooteboom has an extremely rich life experience, allowing him to have an in-depth observation of the world and human existence. He saw the long-lasting and far-reaching effects of war on people, the confusion and anxiety people encounter in modern life, and the intrusion of modern civilization into ancient history. He is deeply concerned about the fate of human beings, and his sense of escape is reflected in his works.By writing about escape,Nooteboom tries to show his thoughts on these problems and seek ways to solve them. This thesis takes Nooteboom’s novels and travelogues as the object of study, and analyzes the sense of escape embodied in Nooteboom’s works through in-depth reading and interpretation of the texts. The thesis is divided into five parts: introduction, reasons for escape, ways of escape, results of escape, and conclusion. The introductory part focuses on the analysis of Nooteboom’s personal experience, the creation characteristics of his works, the current status of the research and the innovation of the research. The first chapter mainly analyzes the reasons of escape in the work. The development of the modern world has brought two major spiritual dilemmas to human beings: war has brought traumatic memories to individuals or collectives, and the development of industrial civilization has brought modern crises, both of which have greatly affected people’s spiritual world, making people suffer and giving rise to the idea of escape. The second chapter mainly analyzes the ways of escape in the works. The first is to make changes in the space of social activities, namely, changing the external living space and disappearing into the ritual space;the second is to establish connections with subjects, namely, establishing connections with other subjects and self-subjects.Through establishing connections, people can leave their original life patterns, find the balance of the spiritual world and restore their normal life state. The third chapter focuses on analyzing the results of escape in the work. There are two kinds of results of escape: one is to take the extreme way and completely cut and separate from the present life;the other is to find the middle ground between reality and ideal in the process of escape, and then change the mentality to reconcile with the existing conflicts and finally return to reality.Through these two kinds of escape, different people achieve what they want and get what they want. The concluding part summarizes Nooteboom’s sense of escape, showing his thoughts on escape and his concern for the survival of human beings.
